Audi's Green Goals Advance with the Introduction of
the 2022 Q4 e-trons
Audi has a goal to have more fully electric models on sale in the US than any other luxury automotive brand by the end of 2021. Making clear progress towards that goal, Audi recently announced the introduction of the 2022 Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron.
These two models represent the fourth and fifth fully electric additions to Audi's US portfolio and contribute toward the company's goal of achieving a 30% electrified vehicle portfolio globally by 2025.
By the end of 2021, the Audi Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) portfolio expects to be comprised of the Audi e-tron and e-tron Sportback, Audi e-tron GT and high-performance RS e-tron GT, and the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron.
Can you tell me more about the exterior of the two new Q4 e-trons?
Audi has pulled out the stops on the external design of the e-trons. Both offer striking proportions with enclosed single-frame grilles, front overhangs, bold-sized wheels with staggered tires, and sculpted, muscular body panels. And it's not just all about the looks, the Audi Q4 e-trons progressive design achieves a drag coefficient of 0.24 and 0.26 respectively. Plus, sculpted side mirrors further enhance aerodynamics as well as taming wind noise acoustics. A choice of four exterior colors is available, with S line and black optic body elements available.
Additionally, there's the exterior lighting. The Q4 e-trons offer available Matrix design LED headlights with four customizable daytime running light patterns. At the rear, a light strip links the taillight units to each other and can display animated arrival and departure functions.
Can you tell me more about the technology inside the two new Q4 e-trons?
The premium interiors of the Q4 e-trons are spacious and airy. The steering wheel offers touch surfaces, which the driver can use to control the digital instrumentation cluster. The infotainment and navigation systems are controlled by a 10.1-inch MMI touch display, which also displays the images from multiple surround-view cameras.
Another innovation onboard, the augmented reality head-up display, superimposes the information provided by select driver assist and navigation features on the windshield where it appears in a virtual, floating image. Enhancing the premium sound that Audi is known for is a Sonos premium sound system.
How about Q4 e-tron power train details?
The Q4 is designed to satisfy the needs of both urban commuters and long-distance drivers. The entry-level Q4 40 e-tron RWD has an estimated output of 150 kW, while the top-of-the-range Q4 50 e-tron quattro and Q4 Sportback 50 e-tron quattro offer two electric motors with AWD for a maximum estimated output of 220 kW.
In the AWD models, the rear motor is a permanently excited synchronous motor, similar to what is found in the Audi e-tron GT. The front motor kicks in when high power or strong traction is needed. The advantage of this sort of asynchronous drive is that the front axle does not use any energy when it is not needed, keeping the efficiency similar to that of the rear-wheel-drive e-tron models.
Both Q4 models can be charged using alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) - up to 11 kW with AC, and up to 125 kW DC on a high-speed charger. Preliminary manufacturer's estimated range based on approximation of EPA test cycles for a full charge is approximately 250 miles on the Q4 40 e-tron.
